Sexual Abuse in the Nursing Home

Nursing Homes and Sexual Abuse

It is hard to believe that someone would sexually abuse a nursing home resident. In a nursing home situation, we expect our elders to be protected, not abused. Unfortunately, sexual abuse in the nursing home does happen. Sexual mistreatment and abuse is defined as nonconsensual sexual contact. Examples include sexual harassment, unwanted touching, rape, coerced sex or nudity, and explicit photographing.

Be aware of the following signs of sexual abuse while residents are in a nursing home.

  • Bruises around the breasts or genital areas are signs of sexual abuse.
  • If unexpected venereal disease or infections are diagnosed, suspect sexual abuse.
  • Unexplained bleeding, torn, stained or bloody underclothings are symptoms of sexual abuse.
  • A nursing home resident's report of being sexually abused should be taken seriously and investigated immediately.
