Physical Abuse in the Nursing Home

Types of Physical Abuse in the Nursing Home

Physical abuse is when the caregiver, such as a nurse or nursing home employee inflicts bodily harm with intent. Some examples of physical abuse include grabbing, slapping, pinching, pushing, pulling, choking, kicking, shoving, misuse of restraints or drug misuse to control behavior.

Symptoms of Physical Abuse In a Nursing Home:

  • Bruises, black eyes, welts, skin tears, or rope burns are symptoms of nursing home abuse.
  • Unexplained broken bones, open wounds, cuts and untreated injuries are indicators of even more serious abuse.
  • Changes in a loved one's behavior may signal abuse of medications for restraining.
  • Subtle signs such as broken eyeglasses and torn clothes may warrant concern about abuse.
  • Any reports of physical abuse by an elder nursing home resident are cause for alarm.
  • If a caregiver doesn't allow a patient to visit alone with friends or family, you might want to look for other physical signs of abuse.
