Some Facts About Nursing Homes

The American public is not very aware when it comes to what goes on inside nursing homes. Here are a few facts that you may be interested in:

Some nursing homes provide better care than others.

Nursing homes are just like people, they have their own strengths, weaknesses and skill levels. While each nursing home offers the same basic services, such as nursing care, food services, recreational activities, laundry and round the clock care, some facilities will emphasize one type of care over another.

For example, some facilities only provide services to Alzheimer patients. Others offer on-site dialysis services. Still others will focus on rehabilitating the stoke victims. If your loved one has special needs, you should find a facility that will meet those needs, because, ultimately you will receive the most effective care that way.

Some people get better in a nursing home, while others do not.

If your mom is in the nursing home recovering from a broken hip, you can realistically expect her to return home once the hip mends, however, if she also has Alzheimer's disease, she may not be able to return home for a long time, if ever. Alzheimer's patients have a hard time understanding a therapist's instructions. If they can't duplicate instructions they can't participate in their rehab. If they are unable to participate in rehab, their hip will not heal enough to regain its use. If she is not able to regain her ability to walk, then she will be in a very tough situation.

Mistakes happen.

Nursing homes are like every other business, which means that mistakes will happen. You shouldn’t expect perfection because you'll always be disappointed. Even in the best-run nursing homes, errors happen. Some of these errors might be minor, while others may be serious, like medication errors or inadequate hydration.

Abuse and Neglect Happens

The sad fact is that nursing homes are plagued by understaffing and poor working conditions. Sometimes the employees will take out their frustrations with their jobs on the nursing home residents. Or, in other cases, they may disregard the patient, allowing horrible things like bedsores and malnutrition to occur. This is simply not o.k.
