A Few Notes on Nursing Home Abuse

It is important to note that elder abuse is a crime. However, according to the United States Government Accounting Office, incidents of abuse are rarely reported to the police. This might be because patients are afraid to complain out of fear of retaliation by the nursing home staff. There are several reasons why a nursing home resident would be reluctant to complain.

It is important to be aware of the symptoms of abuse. If you are aware of the signs of nursing home abuse then you may be able to insure that your loved one is safe from further harm by reporting it as soon as you become aware. Consider the following signs of nursing home abuse:

Physical damage, including bruises, cuts, burns, broken bones and so forth.

Signs of neglect, dehydration, malnourishment, weight loss, poor personal hygiene, pressure sores and unsanitary living conditions.

Emotional or behavioral changes including withdrawal, fear and anxiety, apathy, frequent crying, strained relationships with nursing home staff and complaints of poor treatment.

Unexplained financial losses-missing money or personal items, suspicious transactions, unpaid bills and sudden transfers of assets
