Reports of sub-par care at several nursing homes in Donegal, Cork and Kerry (Ireland) have been outed by the website RTE news.
These reports were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act and document complaints from families over the past few years in public and private nursing homes.
One family complained that socks were put on their father's hands and then tied together, and that he was turned to face the wall. Two nurses admitted to tying up the man.
At one nursing home, an elderly resident was discovered to have broken a shoulder two months after a fall in 2006.
A complaint by the woman's family said that they tried to call for medical assistance after their mother complained over and over of pain.
After an investigation, 76 complaints against 34 private nursing homes in Cork and Kerry were upheld.
Nursing home abuse happens everywhere. We are reporting this abuse from Ireland to show that it occurs everywhere around the globe, not just in the United States.
