I recently read a great article in thestar.com that talks about the quality of care in nursing homes. The author starts by telling us what we already know: most nursing homes provide very low standards of care. Just ask anyone who has ever been inside one.
One interesting point that the author brings up is the fact that many people believe more money will ail the problems of the nursing homes. They think that More money means a better staff and services, and everyone will live out a happier, more dignified life.
The author strongly disagrees, stating that more money doesn't mean better care. He says that the central problem with nursing homes is that those with the power tend to abuse that power. Especially financially.
He says that the majority of nursing homes in Ontario, where he is from, are run by large corporations whose goals are to maximize profits and to minimize costs. They are not in it for the best interests of the people.
As far as solutions to the problem go, the author believes it is in our hands. He says that people are going to need to start providing seniors with familiar environments that they can live in independently and in dignity.
