Choosing a nursing home for your loved ones can be a daunting task. How do you know if a nursing home is a pleasant place to live? How do you know that it is the right place for your Mother or your Grandfather?
To help you with your search, we've compiled this short list of things to look for when choosing a nursing home.
1. The Staff
When you first visit the nursing home, pay attention to the demeanor of the staff. What are they like? Are the attentive to the needs of the residents? Do they talk with them and seem generally upbeat? If the staff seems uptight or unhappy, or they just seem like they are in a constant hurry (due to under staffing) then it is probably best that you look elsewhere.
2. Cleanliness
How does the building rate in terms of cleanliness? Is there an awkward or disgusting smell permeating the building? Check out the nurse's station. Is it chaotic and messy? A smell of urine or feces can indicate poor waste management and could indicate a potential threat to your loved ones health.
3.The Residents
How do the people who actually LIVE there seem? Do they interact with each other and seem generally happy? Talk with a few of them and find out their general opinion of the place. After all, it has become their home.
4. Food
Sample the food. Do the residents eat their food or do they leave most of it on the tray. How healthy do the residents seem? Do they appear to be enjoying themselves at mealtimes? Does it seem like a dining experience or a prison mess hall? Ask to see the menu. Is there a variety or do they serve the same thing every day of the week?
