Causes of Nursing Home Abuse

Every state has laws that include severe criminal penalties for elder abuse. Nursing homes are just as liable as individuals when it comes to these laws.

Many times, nursing home abuse goes unchecked and unreported because the nursing home does not take the abuse seriously. Many of the residents live in fear that if they report their injuries, they will face horrible punishment.

This is why all nursing homes need to be thoroughly inspected prior to establishing residency for the elderly. Families need to be aware of the signs of abuse and neglect so that any suspected residences can be reported. The only way to prevent abuse is to stop it immediately when it is suspected.

The main reasons abuse occurs in nursing home are:

Untrained employees

High Employee turnover

Underpaid and undervalued employees
