Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are becoming more and more expensive every year. According to this associated press article, a survey released by Genworth Financial Inc. finds that baby boomers who are approaching retirement haven't saved enough to cover day-to-day expenses and long-term medical care costs. The study looked at data from more than 10,000 nursing homes, assisted living facilities and home care providers nationwide.
The study also found that the average cost for a private room in a nursing home has risen to $76,460 per year. This is a 17 percent increase since 2004.
A companion to the study found that low wages and benefits--as well as lack of training and career advancement potential--have made it hard to attract workers to the industry.
An interesting alternative to nursing homes can be found in adult day care. The average daily cost for one of these facilities is $59, as opposed to the $209 per day of nursing homes. These centeres are popular with families who have elderly members living in their homes, who need daytime support. This is a much less expensive alternative to a full-time facility.
