A congressional report was released Monday that listed 5,263 nursing homes that have been cited for abuse, according to this CBSnews report. That is almost one third of all the nursing homes in the nation!
Residents were choked, punched and kicked by staff members. One woman in California died last year after a nurse's assistant choked and beat her because she soiled herself. How is this happening? Are the nursing homes not subjecting their employees to background checks?
Some of the residents have been raped and beaten worse than any atrocity committed inside our prisons. Aren't these places supposed to be a home for our loved ones? A place where they can be taken care of and spend their final days in dignity?
Consider these statistics:
3,800 abuse violations were only reported after formal complaints from residents or their family/friends.
1,327 homes were cited for more than one abuse case in a two year period.
192 nursing homes have been cited more than five times for violations!
Nursing home abuse is a serious crime that should not go unpunished. If your loved one has been the victim of nursing home abuse, they may be entitled to a cash settlement.
